Andersonstown Basketball Club is based in Andersonstown in West Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Founded in June 2006 we entered Ulster league basketball with eight teams, ranging from under 10’s right up to and including a Women’s team. We didn’t expect to have so many teams in our first season, but it has been great.
For the 2007-2008 season we now have a men’s team entering local competition, along with the women and junior teams.
Basketball at Andersonstown Leisure centre was rife in the early eighties. Professional players like ‘Boo’ Williams (national chairman of AAU boy’s basketball), Dave Hopla (N.B.A. shooting coach to many of the league’s top players and Shooting Coach to the Toronto Raptors) and Dan Durkin (recently retired Head Coach of Duquesne University Women’s team) were a common face in Andersonstown Leisure Centre and the streets of West Belfast during the troubles.
Currently basketball is the fastest growing indoor sport in Ireland. This seams to be the case with the numbers we have achieved during our first year, and this trend seams set to continue in the coming years.
Andersonstown Basketball Club is a fun and friendly organisation;
‘Open to all, and welcomed by all’
