Tigers Topple Towers in Triple Header

5 Mar 2018 by John Kennedy

A fabulous day of basketball seen the Tigers U14, U16 and U18 teams take on Tyrone Towers in a triple header. With the the U14 Boys and U18 Men looking to keep pressure on the teams above them and the U16 Boys looking to make the double over Towers and make back to back wins, there was a lot at stake and the teams did not disappoint.

U14 Boys took to the court in the first game of the day looking to make it double wins over Towers this season and to keep up the pressure on the teams above them in a very tight league. The guys got off to a quick start, dominating the 1st period using their height advantage, quick passing and movement to lead 20-4. Going into the second, coach Sean changed all five players, however the team could not keep up the form from the 1st period and with both teams missing chances to score, the period ended 7-7 with the Tigers maintaining their lead 27-11. Into the 3rd period and with Towers gaining in confidence, Towers made a number of nice scores to take the period 12-9 to narrow the gap to 13, Tigers ahead 36-23. Tigers regrouped in the fourth and ran out 48-29 winners. Tigers lost Aaron to injury and we wish him a speedy recovery. With a hectic few days coming up to complete the regular league season, Tigers did what they needed to and got the points. Another tough game tomorrow against Phoenix.

U16 Boys took to the court next looking for revenge following their defeat against Towers earlier in the season. They got off to a great start in the first period with some nice early scores to settle them down and led 14-6 at the end of the 1st. Going into the 2nd, Tigers again starting brightly and were looking good to extend their lead, but gave up five points at the end of the period to lead 24-15. Into the 3rd and again the Tigers did enough to build out their lead some nice passing and movement leading to scores. They maintained their concentration right to the end of the period to lead 38-24. The 4th period saw Towers press Tigers more as they tried to get back into the game, however this allowed a number of Tigers fast breaks and for the Tigers to run out 56-38 winners. Great job from coach Scottie and the team today.

In the final game of the day, the U18 Men took on Towers. The first period got off to a slow start with the teams missing a number of opportunities to score, however the Tigers started to warm up later in the period to lead 19-10. Going into the second, Tigers got fully up to speed and with a number of turnovers, fast breaks and great movement, the Tigers dominated the period 24-7 to extend their lead to 43-17. The 3rd period was more of the same and event though coach Scottie was giving everyone plenty of court, the team maintained their form to take the period 27-11 to extend their lead to 70-28 – the question everyone was asking, could they break the 100. Into the 4th, Tigers continued to control the game and score another 24 points to equal the 94 they scored in the first game against Towers, final score 94-38. The only negative in the game was losing Jack to injury and with some more games to play this season, lets hope it is not too serious and we wish him a speedy recovery to full health.
